How to make a vision burlap board

Have you seen these adorable boards in Ballard Designs catalog?

Burlap Message Board

I love them, like just about everything in this catalog.  But like just about everything in this catalog, I don't love the price tag.  $49-$79....Too much for me.

Here is how to make your own, for about $10, or in my case, about the cost of the upholstery nails, $3, everything else I had on hand.  You probably do too.

Supplies needed:
  • Lightweight sturdy wood board of size choosing
  • Cork Board Tiles
  • Quilting Batting
  • Razor Blade or straight Edge
  • Spray Adhesive
  • Large sheet of Burlap (can be purchased for pennies at your local fabric store)
  • Upholstery Nail heads, which can be purchased at any home improvement Store
  • Hammer
  • Staple Gun

I started with a lightweight board I had on hand

I also happened to have cork tiles, but they can be purchased at any craft store or Large Box store like (Target).  I don't recommend using cork roll, it is not thick enough to be a bulletin source.  I sprayed the board with spray adhesive, then used plates to weight it down while it dried.

Since the cork tiles won't fit exactly, I used a straight edge to even it up.

All covered

After the tiles are in place, cover it with batting

Then cover piece with burlap.  You will probably want to iron it after you are sure you have enough to cover.  Make sure you have about two inches all around for room to staple.

Flip board over and prepare to staple!

Staple at each side, pulling tight as you go, do opposite sides, after you have stapled all the sides, begin on the corners.

I made a pleat with the extra fabric, and added a few more staples here.  Trim off the excess. This side won't look too nice, but no one but your wall will see it.

Now get your hammer and upholstery nails handy

Space the nails out as you would like them.  (A Diet Pepsi helps your concentration).  This is a great project to get your kids involved in too.  This is my son's hand....

And voila!  You have a finished burlap Vision board.

  2. Great idea Charlie! I'm going to do this one! Lord knows I need a pretty spot to attach all my various notes to (instead of them being all over the place!)

Have tried to do painted, glazed or laquered burlap on cabinet inserts and dado panels? I have - it looks great.
