Room Redoux, Decor8 Style with a Shazam!

One of the good things about a long car trip, there is lots of time to do nothing, or read, if you are not the person driving!

Since it was long drive, I had the opportunity to read the entire Decor 8 new book.  It was AHMAZING!

If you don't follow the Decor8 blog, you need to sign up right now.

The book is jam packed with beautiful pictures, design and decorating advice, and tons and tons of "les idées de vous inspirer"

One particular section that struck a cord with me were family rooms.  Holly gives great advice on making little nooks and comfortable places to sit in more than one area in a room.  I love built in benches, or corner pieces where you can cozily sit and read, or work. I have tried to incorporate this into my family room area, but I just wasn't "feeling the love", no matter what combination I tried.

The room always felt disjointed and like a hodge podge of furniture and activities all crammed into one area.

Sometimes le inspiration comes at the least unexpected moments.  I was reading on the couch late one evening and looked up at the space, for the  jillionth time.  Shazam. The idea hit me.  I would take the modular corner benches I had built and were living in my living room (which I was also not in love with), and put them in the corner.  Use the under bench area as storage, give away the dresser/book shelf, and add  an existing mirror and more artwork to the space.

I was up early the next morning and it all fell into place.

Using pieces I already owned, I moved the book shelf (formerly a kitchen cabinet from a tear out) into the space, added accessories that were languishing in my garage (Thrift Store finds), and instantly had a new room!

I moved the console table to a different wall....

And created a cozy spot for kids to do a craft project, homework (ack, soon!), or hang out and play a game.

More mirrors in the space, mean more light.  The room is so much happier now, and finally feels "complété"!

On a closing note.  No one noticed I changed anything except for red headed child, who notices everything!  Creative daughter used for model in pictures, simply came downstairs upon waking and went right to the new area.  Got out her artwork and started drawing.  Oldest child did not notice until I pointed it out, about 5:00 that afternoon.  Still waiting on suffering husband to take note.
Well, "tel est la vie" at my home.
